Overview

Diplopia (the medical term for double vision) is an expanding collection of texts focusing on the narrative history of Haiti as a site of negritude with a focus on Vodou. This compilation of work seeks to introduce and re-frame a collective experience of liberation in Haiti and utilize the syncretic nature of Voodoo as an exploration of negritude.


Specifications

Type set by Marshall Barg in fall 2022 at Yale University.

Body text set in Bagatela with additional text set in Krete.

Photos sourced from Phyllis Galembo’s “Sodo”. 


Design

  • Text Block and aspect ratio designed to fit various forms of content including: poetry, broadcast excerpts, footnotes, and an interview 

  • Content and design motifs focused on water and its signifgance for Voodoo

  • Main typeface chosen due to its ink traps to embody the concept of expanding narratives

  • Vellum center spread

  • Watercolor paper blank cover
